2. THE STRUCTURE OF THE SUPERVISORY ORGANISATION(s)
The Head of the Supervisory Organisation (name and function): Aija Mezsarga, Head of Health Inspectorate of Latvia. The aim of Health Inspectorate of Latvia is to reduce the risk for society and consumer health by realizing state surveillance. Health Inspectorate is to perform state administration functions in the field of supervision and control of the sector, in order to fulfil and implement requirements set by the laws and regulations valid in the said sphere.
The main tasks of Health Inspectorate of Latvia in Health care:
- Control of medical treatment institutions.
- Supervision and control of availability of health care services and application of the public funding.
- Control of quality of health care and capacity checks.
- Maintenance of the Register of Medical Institutions and the Register of Medical Persons and Medical Support Persons.
- Control of pharmaceutical companies and circulation of drugs.
- Control of distribution and application (operation) of medical devices.
Size of the Supervisory Organisation:
Number of inspections/supervisions or number of inspectors or number of full time equivalents of people working in the organisation; number of hospitals or health institutions under supervision: There are 96 people working in health care monitoring, control and evaluation of conformity in the Health Inspectorate of Latvia (including drug control – 13, control of medical institutions – 24, service control – 6, control of quality of health care – 32.
There are all hospitals and health institutions under Health Inspectorate supervision in Latvia.

In according with Latvian normative regulations, health care professionals who have been certified and registered in the medical persons and medical support persons register are permitted to independently engage in medical treatment in a specific basic speciality, sub-speciality or additional speciality in conformity with the competence stipulated by the Latvian Cabinet of Ministers.
Supervision of medical devices on health care institutions and inspections of importers and distributor, also support for Customs administrations.
